Insurance Coverage

At Turning Point, we want accessing care to be as simple as possible. The good news is that our services are covered by all major insurance providers. However, coverage can look different for each person depending on their individual insurance policy.

While our clinic is fully recognized, your plan must specifically include counselling or psychotherapy in order for the sessions to be reimbursed. To give you extra confidence, Turning Point is also a pre-approved practice with SunLife and BlueCross, which means our services are widely accepted.

We always recommend that clients check with their insurance provider to confirm the details of their coverage before booking.

Direct Billing

In Newfoundland, direct billing for counselling and psychotherapy is unfortunately not available for any Psychotherapist practice. This is due to an administrative issue between the Province and the insurers themselves—our team is fully licensed at the national level, which is the highest standard currently available in the province.

The challenge lies in how insurers and the provincial system interact. Insurance companies require provincial licensing in order to enable direct billing. Since Newfoundland does not yet have a provincial regulatory body for counsellors or psychotherapists, insurers only allow reimbursement billing.

This means that you pay for your session at the time of service, then submit your receipt to your insurer for reimbursement according to your coverage. We’ll ensure you have everything you need to make this process as smooth as possible and answer any questions you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. In Newfoundland, direct billing for counselling and psychotherapy is unfortunately not available for any Psychotherapist practice due to a lack of provincial regulatory body required by all major insurers. Psychotherapists in Newfoundland as a result must seek licensing through extra-provincial bodies such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Because there is no provincial regulatory body for Counselling or Psychotherapy in Newfoundland, any practice that offers direct billing belongs to a neighbouring profession. Sometimes other professions such as Guidance Counsellors, Nurses, Psychologists or Social Workers can train to do some degree of counselling. Sometimes these professions have their own regulatory body which satisfies the requirements of insurers and they may be able to provide direct billing. However, for Mental Health Counsellors and Psychotherapists themselves, there is unfortunately no regulatory body.

Individual therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long, while group therapy sessions, including family therapy, may be longer. The length of each session may vary depending on the needs of the client. Extensions to the traditional 50 minute session blocks are available. To secure such an extension, please mention this to your therapist as soon as possible.

At Turning Point, our practitioners are trained in all traditional counselling and psychotherapy approaches. The specific techniques used in your sessions are guided by the expertise of your practitioner and tailored to your unique needs.

We value the research and learning many clients bring with them and welcome open conversations about approaches you may be interested in. Sometimes people bring their own preferences to therapy and this is absolutely okay. In that case your Therapist will talk to you about your expectations and preferences and build a collaborative treatment plan that aligns with your goals.

That said, our practitioners use their professional judgment to ensure that any techniques applied are appropriate and effective for your circumstances. If a particular approach is not recommended in your situation, we will explain why and work with you to find the best alternatives.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a new and rapid-paced treatment protocol for extinguishing trauma responses and alleviating symptomology in patients.

While Turning Point specializes in the treatment of trauma and traumatic disorders, we do not offer EMDR.
